What is the agentic internet?
Nine questions an agent must answer to operate, each with the open spec that answers it and the failure it refuses.
The answer
The agentic internet is a layered set of open protocols through which software agents discover, identify, authorize, trust, transact with and audit one another — one question per layer, one spec each. It is being built because the durable value in an agent economy is the protocol every implementation must speak, not any single agent that speaks it.
One layer per question
Identity answers who an agent is; the graph answers what exists; discovery answers who can act on an intent; trust answers whether to deal; the gateway answers how to reach the ordinary web; representation answers how an organisation is shown to machines; execution answers how a collaboration operates; commerce answers how value moves; and audit answers what happened.
A single query walks the whole stack in that order, and each layer hands the next a checkable fact rather than a promise — which is the property the token-sale era of 2017–2019 never had, because an address and a balance cannot answer who is acting or on whose authority.
The refusals are the product
Each layer’s guarantee is written as something a caller cannot do rather than something it should not: an intent has no visibility parameter, a grant cannot widen, a witness cannot be the actor, a payment cannot skip its human gate. A guideline can be argued past under pressure; a missing parameter cannot.
