What is Web 4?

The answer
Web 4 is the agentic internet: the stack of open protocols through which software agents discover, identify, authorize, trust, transact with and audit one another. This page answers the build question — how the layers are engineered and what each refuses — while the canonical definition of the term is owned elsewhere in the group.
Why a build practice has a view on the name
The term matters to an engineer because it names a stack rather than a slogan: nine layers, each a protocol with a dependency-free checker and an honest status, none of them called a settled convention until an organisation outside the estate has conformed to it. A practice that shipped through the previous generation of this field is well placed to say what the layers must refuse rather than only what they promise.
